M.I Hummel - Crystals & Figurines

About this Collection

Now a popular collector's series, the Hummel figurines began as the drawings of a young nun named Maria Innocentia Hummel, nee Berta Hummel. Having studied at Munich's Academy of Applied Arts in 1927, Hummel entered the Convent of Siessen following graduation, a Franciscan sect of nuns that emphasized teaching and the arts. Being thus encouraged in developing her talents, Sister Hummel drew several pictures of her surroundings, particularly of the children. German publishers printed these images on postcards, which eventually came to the attention of Franz Goebel, a porcelain manufacturer. He translated her drawings into figurines, which are now amongst some of the most popular collectors items of this genre. Pop culture references to Hummel statues include references on the Simpsons, Gilmore Girls, Seinfeld, and Glee, amongst others.
