The Adidas brand is named for its founder, an abbreviation of Adolf "Adi" Dassler. Prior to the 1936 Olympics, Adolf convinced Jesse Owens to wear his spiked running shoes. This agreement is now recognized as the first Olympic sponsorship for an African American. Owens won four gold medals that year, bringing great recognition to the Dassler sports shoes. Adidas is now a multi-billion dollar establishment, producing sneakers specifically tailored to every major sport, in addition to watches, bags, eyewear, and apparel.
