Battle of the Brands: Fendi vs Prada

Battle of the Brands: Fendi vs Prada

Two iconic luxury brands... which one do you go with? When it comes to deciding between these two powerhouses, we must take a look at some popular styles, brand initiates, and the history of both Fendi & Prada. After that... you can decide which is your favorite!

The Origins: Similarities & Differences

Fendi was established in 1925 by Edoardo Fendi. The brand started off as a fur and leather shop in Rome. Fendi did so well that at a point, the company actually assisted in the design of police uniforms in Rome! After Edoardo passed away in 1946, the company continued to be managed by his five daughters, Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla, and Alda.

Did you know that in 1999 Prada and LVMH (Louis Vuitton & Moët Hennessy) acquired Fendi? Despite the acquisition, the 3rd generation Fendi sisters continued managing the brand. But now that we're on the topic: let's talk Prada...

Mario Prada started the first Prada store in 1913. Being in the fashion hub of Milan, in just a few years, Prada became renowned for its bags and trunks. It even became the official supplier for Italian royals in 1919! Also, a family business, Mario's daughter Luisa took over after his passing. She helped expand the brand even more!

Later on, Mario's granddaughter, Miuccia, joined the business. She introduced the signature nylon bag we all know and love to this day! What was so groundbreaking about the nylon bag wasn't that it was waterproof, although that was certainly a plus. What made it so unique was that it was the opposite of what was expected of a luxury fashion brand like Prada. At that time, the heavier the bag, typically meant the nicer it was considered.

Brand Initiatives

Both Fendi and Prada are known for their fine leather goods. Fendi is also well known for its stylish furs. However, in recent years the Fendi company has been under scrutiny by several anti-fur organizations.

Fendi does not want to completely stop using fur in their products, as fur is a huge part of their company. However, the brand did make a big statement by displaying Faux fur in their Paris runway show a little while back. While the brand isn't focusing on removing fur, it has begun using recycled materials to reduce waste.

Prada, on the other hand, has vowed to stop using fur in its products. They have also commented regarding diversity and inclusion, promising to invest substantially in educational; advancement programs. Prada is known for its minimalistic designs. By staying simple, it has been able to stay true to its traditional yet modern origins.
